Fate of Dulles Metro Line to Be Discussed Today

from washingtonpost.com

The FTA met with local lawmakers and officials today about the fate of the proposed Silver Line. New concerns were brought up in addition to ones previously stated.

“I would say that they have concerns that are significant, many of which for the first time we are hearing,” Kaine said, without elaborating on what the federal government’s concerns are.

“All of these issues have been addressed through some form of prior FTA approval,” the lawmakers said in their letter. “We are concerned that FTA may be revisiting issues that were addressed months or even years ago.”

We should know the future of the Silver Line by the end of this month.

Federal Qualms Leave Dulles Rail at Risk

from washingtonpost.com

Numerous sources close to the project — in congressional offices, the airports authority and state government — say their optimism soured in recent days as they began hearing from the FTA and Transportation Department officials.

Curiously, there is no mention of TysonsTunnel.org’s lawsuit against the FTA. If the plan is not approved, what will become of the utility line relocations going on? It looks as though the federal agencies might be in favor of other alternatives to the costly projects.

Some say the FTA has long been skeptical of expensive rail projects; in recent years, it has more often championed bus rapid transit projects.

We’ll have to wait to see what happens.

Tysons Planners Thinking ‘Circulator’

from washingtonpost.com

The concept of a circulator has become a major point of discussion for the Tysons Land Use Task Force, in part because boosters say it is a critical component of the success of the redevelopment effort.

The task force, in place for three years, is entering the final phase of its work and preparing to deliver recommendations to the county no later than April. A circulator is expected to figure heavily in those plans.

An elevated rail is not the only plan for the current project.
