Candidates Address Chamber

NewsChannel 8 anchor Dave Lucas moderated the forum, posing questions about transportation problems, local business community concerns and of course, the much debated issue of underground Metorail through Tysons.
Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and Democratic incumbent Gerald Connolly defended his record of service against his Republican opponent, lawyer Gary Baise.

The Tysons Metro plans appear to be one of the more important issues in the upcoming elections.

Baise Vows to Stop Dulles Rail In Its Tracks - Virginia Politics -

Republican Gary H. Baise says that if elected Chairman of the Fairfax Board of Supervisors he would halt the planned Metrorail extension to Dulles International Airport unless the elevated segment through Tysons Corner was built below ground.

This is quite interesting. This could sway a lot of votes his way because of the majority preference for the underground tunnel. This could put the possibility of the project even happening at all.

“Yes we need metro, but we need it right,” said Williams. “We’ve already reached the point where the cost is unjustified,” he said.
Hudgins said that the extension has been in the planning process for 40 years. “We can’t afford to keep planning,” she said. Hudgins added that in the debate over the cost-benefit analysis nobody is taking into account air quality.
